Panic Attacks. Are They All In Your Head ?

If you suffer from panic attacks you have probably heard from at least one person that Panic Attacks Are All In Your Head. Well that might be true when you think about it literally, but when you break anxiety, stress and panic attacks down into there more basic levels, the all in your head argument doesn't  really make much sense at all

I bet some of you are thinking that this guy doesn't know what he's talking about! I've been suffering from anxiety and panic attacks for many years now and I can guarantee that have a lived with panic and anxiety long enough to understand the subject very well. I'm not a doctor or a mental health professional but I do know from experience that panic attacks are definitely not all in your head.

Take for example the fact that many sufferers(me included) do much better when they modify there lifestyles, such as exercises and healthier eating habits. These things are not all in your head they are external factors that can be modified, and in many cases they are all that is needed to bring you out of there constant state of panic and anxiety.

I am well aware that this is not true in all cases, however in the majority of cases these lifestyle adjustments will help to lower levels of anxiety and panic significantly. For instance just reducing sugar and caffeine intake or cutting them out completely can help to lower anxiety levels and in turn reduce the severity and frequency of panic attacks

Eating more nutritious whole foods and less junk and processed foods will help to replenish the nutrients that we lack as a result of poor eating habits I honestly believe that the majority of panic attacks are a result of poor lifestyles that eventually catch up to us over time. If you disagree/agree or just have you own opinions about what I have written, leave a comment. I welcome all feedback good or bad..

  4. My sister has anxiety and panic attacks and she says they can be completely debilitating. She has had treatment by many doctors and they say that it is not all in her head.
She has gotten better but still needs treatment which involves psychological therapy and medication.
    Great site!

  5. I to suffered from anxiety, mostly in conjunction with depression and manic-depression. You mentioned cutting the sugar and caffeine, this indeed is good, but do so slowly for cutting these out quickly can in itself cause anxiety.

  6. Panic attacks are a two headed monster, there are emotional and the physical symptoms. But it is the emotional symptom, the anxiety itself, which creates the frightening physical symptoms. This is why therapy is recommended.

  8. Hi Percaine,
I particularly agree with your statement reducing sugar and caffeine intake. Anything to help! And the worst is not being believed about what you are going through. People who suffer from this need to know there is help. Thank you for putting this information out there.

  9. Too much caffeine can also lead to panic attack or anxiety. You can go for decaff products for a healthier choice.

  10. Yes I believe that a healthier diet and regular exercise can help stop panic attacks. This is a great article.

When panic attacks become unbearable one has to find a way to stop it ASAP or the person might be paranoid living in fear of another panic attack.

  11. I remember some years back suffering from a panic attack in of all places, a health food store. I am not making this up. For real!!! Once I was out in the fresh air I felt fine.
This was South Street Phila, PA as fresh as the air could be in a quite industrial city.
Wonder if panic attacks and other anxiety d/os could be caused by chemicals in the environment

  14. Hello, I would like to talk about panic, anxiety and agoraphobia. I had all of these things for 45 years until I realized one day what the possible problem could be. I am happy to say this condition isn't in your head and is a physical condition. Most people are born with this and runs in family. Other people get this from traumatic brain injury, others from neurological problems. I have lost 90% of my symptoms by confronting this problem head on.
I have a blog at agoraphobiawhat.blogspot.com and I have written a book about this and it can be found on Amazon. "My SILENT DISABILITY" by Yolanda Antonino.
I wish you all the best. Yolanda

  17. It feels like your heart is beating out of your chest. You can't breathe. For me it feels like I'm falling downwards and I can't stop falling. You're dizzy and you begin to worry that you won't stop feeling like this. I feel that I won't stop falling until I'm dead. It's horrible. For treatment options, look at my sources.

    1. Thanks, if I can save just one person from going through what I had to go through would be the reason I keep plugging away one blog at a time. Maybe just one word would be enough to get someone started in another direction. Thank you for your kind words. Yolanda
